A Beautiful Full Home Interior Renovation in Mackenzie Heights
Kerr Design Build is transforming the interior of a Mackenzie Heights character home through a full renovation that will open the home up, improve circulation, and bring a fresh sense of light and coherence to a house that has evolved through many earlier changes. The project reimagines the main floor, refinishes key architectural features, and refines the private spaces upstairs for modern living.
A New Heart of the Home
The kitchen will be completely reworked. A window on the main wall will be closed in to create space for a full cooking and storage zone. The fridge and range will anchor this wall, with a pantry and dedicated coffee centre extending toward the back. This new layout allows the kitchen to function as the true centre of the home.
A large island will sit in the middle of the room and will open directly into the new dining area. By removing the wall between the two spaces, the design creates long, natural sightlines and a seamless connection to the rear doors and the outdoor space. With the back of the home opened up, light will pass more freely from one end to the other.
Correcting Past Layout Decisions
One of the first major changes involves relocating a bathroom that currently occupies the best view line at the rear of the house. Moving it to the opposite side of the floor restores the space’s natural hierarchy and allows the kitchen and dining area to take full advantage of the light and outlook.
The existing office beside the kitchen will become the dining room, creating a cohesive, open main floor where cooking, gathering, and outdoor access are connected.
Opening the Living Room
The living room will remain in its original position, but the narrow doorway that separates it from the hall will be widened. This single adjustment creates a continuous flow from the front windows through the living room and dining area to the back of the house, greatly expanding the sense of space while preserving the home’s proportions.
The fireplace, one of the home’s original features, will also be updated. Its existing surface will be re-clad in a sandy-toned stone with grey undertones, creating an elevated focal point in the room.
Brightening the Upper Floor
The renovation extends upstairs, with improvements to the hallway, which will receive new panelling and wallpaper. These changes lighten the space and integrate the upper level into the refreshed main floor’s design language. A small closet will be removed to make room for a display table and artwork.
The laundry area will also be improved, with a wider opening to accommodate new doors, making the space more functional and visually consistent with the surrounding rooms.
Refining the Primary Suite
The primary bedroom features impressive windows and a clear view, but two small accent windows disrupt the room’s symmetry. These will be closed in to create a balanced wall that better supports furniture placement and improves the overall atmosphere.
In the ensuite, the layout will be reconfigured to optimize space. The shower will remain in place, while the toilet will move to the opposite wall. The existing small vanity will be replaced with a full-length double vanity. During preparation, a previous renovation revealed an unusual discovery: a wall had been built across part of a sliding glass door, leaving half the door hidden. The renovation will address this by shifting the wall to restore the entire door.
A Clearer, Brighter Future
The redesign brings cohesion to a home that has accumulated decades of disconnected updates. With a more functional layout, improved flow, and carefully selected materials, the finished home will feel brighter, more open, and more consistent throughout.
The project, now in framing, is progressing smoothly.
Kerr Design Build looks forward to sharing each stage of the journey as this remarkable home takes on its new life.
