A Beautiful View Deserves a Beautiful Deck
Some properties in the Lower Mainland are spectacular and deserve spectacular treatment.
Kerr Design Build had the good fortune to beautify one such property in Harbour Chimes in Coquitlam. An incredible second-story steel cantilevered deck was added to the back of the house, looking out onto a breathtaking vista of Eagle Mountain in the distance.
The project was spearheaded by project consultant Elton Donald and senior designer Nisha McNeil.
Hard work getting city approvals
Approvals for the work from the City of Coquitlam required creative problem-solving because of existing non-conforming work on the site and tight sideyard property right of way. Elton had to go to the Board of Variance and work with the head of the city’s engineering department to retain some of the work that the city considered non-conforming.
Steel construction, special features
The deck was constructed of steel to minimize the number of support pillars. The property shape is irregular, so the design carefully followed the rear yard setback line to allow the deck to be as large as possible. Hence the angular shape.
The result is sensational. The deck seems to float over the property, thanks to the steel construction.
The deck itself has numerous special features. The large sliding glass doors leading to the dining room required major structural upgrades. The result is that, when opened, the deck feels like an extension of the house. The clients practically live on the deck in the summer, entertaining and enjoying the space. Who wouldn’t?
The beautiful privacy wall is made of concrete panels. The cabinet setup and planter boxes are also site-formed concrete. These features are durable. There is a built-in hutch for drinks and an exterior-rated wine chiller.
Outside heaters and a fire table completed the project. The client supplied their own furniture.
Garage lift installed
The client also requested that Kerr fix their garage so that a lift was installed, allowing two cars to park in one stall. A very nice feature to have.
The construction phase for the full project took around eight months due to the complexities that arose.
The result was well worth it. An incredible addition to a beautiful family home in a fabulous location.
