Dark and Cramped to Bright and Spacious: The Open Connection Kitchen, Finalist at the Ovation Awards 2018
The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association (GVHBA) Ovation Awards highlights the best projects its members have built, renovated, designed, and marketed in Metro Vancouver. In its ninth year, the GVHBA Ovation Awards continues to capture the attention of the industry, as well as the public.
Why an Open Kitchen?
Our entry, Open Kitchen Connection, has been selected as a Finalist in the “Best Kitchen under 75k” category.
The house where this newly renovated kitchen can be found has been in the family for years. Before the transformation, it was a dark and cramped space. The owners found the old kitchen no longer reflected their lifestyle and needs. This lead to enlisting Kerr Construction to create a contemporary open concept as the main objective of the renovation. Our clients wanted a welcome and open space that would effectively connect outdoor and indoor living – and we were happy to make that a reality!
Struggles of renovation
Kerr Construction and Design had a clear picture of the clients’ desired results and set about creating a concept that would respect the family history of the home whilst achieving the specified needs.
Our experts have ample experience in designing family-friendly home renovations and were easily able to overcome challenges such as removing asbestos-wrapped ductwork and tiles, as well as clearing formaldehyde insulation which would be harmful to the family.
Renovation costs were kept at bay by repurposing leftover materials for the floor and ceiling.
Construction and Design
The Kerr process made it simple to finalize a concept and smoothly transition to construction.
Light, bright colours were used to capture that contemporary West Coast vibe, plus it allowed for light to reflect, making the space look brighter and more spacious. This colour scheme was used throughout the home to achieve a cohesive theme.
In terms of the “open connection,” the deck was built so that it flows through to the kitchen, with an option to close it off using an eclipse door. This allows ample natural light to come in and, even though there is a door, it doesn’t really make one feel separated from the outdoor area.
Kerr Construction and Design is proud to be nominated as a finalist for “Best Kitchen under 75k” in the 2018 Ovations Awards. We love the transformation from dark and cramped to bright and spacious that we achieved for our clients. The end result is a beautiful, family-focused Open Connection Kitchen.
