Building Permit Specialist
Job Description
Are you great at making your way around the City Hall? Are you in your comfort zone when it comes to facilitating the application of building permits and the relationship with the City? Would you love to work in a fun, pet-friendly office environment?
Kerr Construction & Design is an award-winning design-build firm currently looking for a talented, motivated, and creative Residential Architect with a passion for construction and customer service, to work with their company. Work hours are flexible with a combination of working from home and office depending on the project and will have a heavy emphasis on building permit design.
Description of Duties:
- Prepare, review, and manage municipal building permits.
- Develop databases and schedules to track permit timelines and actions.
- Manage permit conditions and commitments for compliance tracking and reporting.
- Preparate and/or review technical correspondence, project proposals, technical reports, work plans, and project specifications including cost estimates and budgets.
- Advise internal Senior Designers on permitting issues.
- Provide advice and strategies to clients for obtaining municipal permits, licenses, and approvals.
- Communicate effectively and work with regulators and other stakeholders with or on behalf of Kerr Construction to further project delivery and success.
- Help in the development of architectural designs.
- Analyze building codes, bylaws, space requirements, site requirements and other technical documents and reports.
- Prepare manual and CAD (computer-assisted design) drawings, specifications, cost estimates and listings of quantities of material from conceptual drawings and instructions.
- Build architectural, display, and 3-D virtual models of architectural designs.
- Provide detailed zoning reviews and feasibility studies where required.
Skills and Requirements:
- Proficiency in REVIT, Auto CAD, Adobe Creative Suite or Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Experience with Chief Architect and Sketch-up is an asset
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with AutoCAD
- Diploma or bachelor’s in architecture or Building Sciences
- Ability to read, understand and translate technical drawings
- Ability to create millwork drawings
- Able to work under pressure and handle multiple projects and a variety of tasks
- Working knowledge of Vancouver area, residential construction
- Minimum of 5+ years of experience in the production of construction drawings for residential projects
- Strong experience liaising with clients, consultants, and different cities (Vancouver and North Vancouver preferably)
- Successful at permit submission within the greater Vancouver area and surrounding cities
- Good knowledge of compliant wall assemblies
- Ability to read, understand and translate technical drawings
- Ability to create millwork drawings
- Able to work under pressure and handle multiple projects and a variety of tasks
- Working knowledge of Vancouver area, residential construction
- Experience with VBBL compliance
- Understanding F.R.R and STC ratings
- Ability to prepare and assemble complete construction documents for permit application and tender
- Strong technical knowledge of building systems, construction methods and materials with an emphasis on Single-Family Residential
- Understanding of BC Building Code and building envelope concepts
- Proficiency in developing project models and construction documents for single-family residential dwellings
- Proficiency in manipulating CAD data for import into Revit models
- Relevant understanding of current City bylaws and BC Building codes
- Able to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle multiple projects
- Excellent written and spoken English skills
- Organized and able to work well independently
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must own a reliable vehicle and a valid Canadian Driver’s Licence

Description of Duties:
- Leading construction team to complete high-quality projects on schedule.
- This is an on the tools working management position, where you are on tools a significant amount on smaller projects and less so on larger ones.
- Actively work on the training of all employees on your team.
- Approving bills of suppliers and sub-trades and keeping projects on budget.
- Working with clients throughout the project to ensure an excellent customer experience.
Skills and Requirements:
- Track record of successfully managing construction projects.
- Must have vehicle and tools.
- Must be willing and able to learn new ways to do things.
- Great Teamwork and Organizational Skills.
- Must be able to show successfully completed residential projects in Canada where you were either the lead carpenter or site supervisor.
- Need to have Red Seal Carpentry Ticket or equivalent experience.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
