Kerr Construction Looking Out for the Environment
Climate change, pollution and safeguarding our dwindling natural resources are concerns shared by those at Kerr Construction & Design.
A great personal example is Office Controller Evy Iverson. Evy just purchased a 2019 Kia Soul EV Luxury, a fully electric vehicle.
Positive impact on the environment
Evy purchased the car because “I wanted to make a positive impact on the environment and do my part to stop pollution. Even though an electric vehicle can be a bit pricier there are lots of incentives. There are still places around where you can plug in for free so I am saving money and helping the planet.”
The Soul EV is an innovative, attractive vehicle with 109 horsepower and a range of 179 km between charges. It is also fun to drive because, with the electric drive, there’s no revving up or switching gears. It accelerates immediately, providing incredible pickup with absolutely no engine noise.
“I love this car and the acceleration on an electric is so fun! I want to do everything I can to recycle, reduce waste and stop pollution and this is a big step towards that. I have been talking to my friends and co-workers about the Kia and I hope I can inspire others to go electric too. In BC we have clean hydro-electric power so that makes me feel that I am making a difference.”
Renovations better for the environment
From a company perspective, renovating a home is easier on the environment than tearing down and building new.
Doug Kerr, Kerr Construction & Design’s founder, says that “it is the ultimate in recycling when compared to a new build as the amount of lumber, concrete, steel, wiring, gyproc, etc. that is reused is very significant.”
Not too long ago, the trend in Vancouver was to completely tear a home down and rebuild from scratch. People when they just paid $2 million for a small lot on the west side thought they should have something entirely new rather than fixing up an older home.
Renovations are more popular today
Today, however, Doug finds that the market is settling down with home buyers and owners looking more for renovations than rebuilds again. This is much better for the environment in two ways. Vast amounts of building material are recycled and the home ends up using less energy as it is brought up to new energy efficient standards.
