The Woodhurst Home
WOODHURST · BURNABY, BC
A full main floor renovation plus master bedroom, ensuite, and bathroom — designed to feel unmistakably modern while making room for a lifetime of collected antiques. Every detail planned twice before anything was built.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
A Whole Home Transformed, Room by Room
The clients came to Kerr Design Build in spring 2021 with a clear sense of what they wanted — a modern home that didn’t erase their past. They had antique furnishings they loved and a Burnaby home that needed to be rebuilt around them. The scope covered the entire main floor, the master bedroom, the ensuite, and a third bathroom. Elton Donald and designer Steven Butler led the early stages — working through layouts, producing 3D renderings of different options, and designing the custom cabinetry that would define the space: the kitchen, the family entertainment wall, the bedroom built-ins, and the hallway display cabinetry.
Construction began in January 2022 with site manager Nelson Szeto overseeing daily progress and keeping the clients involved throughout. Interior designer Nisha MacNeil guided the final layer — materials, furnishings, and accessories — bringing the modern aesthetic together with the pieces the clients had carried through their lives.

Modern and Considered, From Every Angle
A kitchen designed from the inside out
The kitchen cabinetry was designed by Steven Butler with obsessive attention to how the space would actually be used — custom inserts, layouts tuned to the family’s habits, and a white marble island that anchors the room. A circular glass dining table sits nearby, pulling natural light from the large windows into the heart of the space.
The entertainment wall and built-ins
The family room called for a custom entertainment wall — a piece that would hold the television without dominating the room. Flanking it: built-in shelving and cabinetry designed to display the clients’ collected objects with intention. The hallway display cabinetry carries the same logic through the rest of the home.
New and old in the same room
Nisha MacNeil’s brief was to achieve a modern look while weaving in the clients’ antique furnishings. The result is a home where a brown leather sofa, a geometric chandelier, and a marble electric fireplace share a room without any of them looking out of place. The antiques didn’t have to disappear — they just needed the right setting.
Bathrooms that feel like destinations
The master ensuite features large circular mirrors above dual sinks, black fixtures, a glass-walled shower, and a freestanding tub positioned at the window. The powder room got its own moment — a woodgrain vanity, a circular mirror, and a geometric light fixture that makes a small space feel considered.
Designed Twice Before Anything Was Built
The project began with months of back-and-forth before construction started. Steven Butler produced multiple layout options and 3D renderings for each — visualizing different configurations, materials, and lighting so the clients could see the space before committing to it. That investment at the front end is what made the build go well. When construction began, the decisions were already made. Nelson Szeto kept the clients updated daily, flagged issues as they arose, and made sure nothing moved forward without their input.
In the clients’ words: “We would definitely recommend Kerr Design Build to anyone considering a renovation. They handled our project in a professional manner.”
