Kerr Design Build Shines at Vancouver Fall Home Show with “Best in Show” Award-Winning Booth

Kerr Design Build was presented with the prestigious “Best in Show” award at the Vancouver Fall Home Show 2023 earlier this month. The award is presented to the company booth that home show judges determine is the most aesthetic and functional at the show.

Our award-winning booth, designed by Leo Chester, one of our senior designers, is a masterclass in elegant yet functional design.

Striking Balance: Elegance and Simplicity

The booth’s initial concept aimed to strike a balance between eye-catching elegance and simplicity. While early designs leaned toward complexity, practicality prevailed. The heart of the design consists of a custom-profiled laminated plywood piece, repeated horizontally 40 times. This design approach leverages the beauty of simplicity and repetition.

Temporary, Yet Stable

Creating a temporary structure that is both stable and secure without mechanical fastenings posed a challenge. The team utilized slender aluminum corner posts and an inventive floor attachment method to meet this challenge. This minimalist, open design complies with venue requirements while maintaining stability.

Curves and Rhythms

The booth’s captivating design hinges on soft, undulating curves of plywood fins, creating depth compared to linear alternatives. Spaced at 6-inch intervals, these fins establish an engaging rhythm and serve as a canvas for LED lighting. Depending on the viewing angle, the booth offers a fresh perspective on its overall form.

Form Meets Function

Enhancing functionality, a horizontal band atop the plywood fins doubles as a backdrop for the company logo and provides structural support. This feature prevents the fins from toppling over while keeping the design simple and elegant.

Attention to Detail

Our construction team paid meticulous attention to detail, concealing brackets and fasteners from view. A floor reducer ensured a clean connection even where carpet tiles met the existing floor. This meticulous approach reflects Kerr’s commitment to perfection.
