Transforming Challenges into Modern Elegant Living Spaces in a Quebec St. Condo
Kerr Design Build recently completed the renovation of a luxurious two-story townhouse condo located on Quebec Street in a prestigious mid-rise building in downtown Vancouver. This transformation has turned an elegant yet problematic space into a modern functional masterpiece perfectly suited to the client’s lifestyle.
Initial Challenges and Vision
Originally acquired brand-new from the developer, the condo, approximately 3,000 square feet, presented immediate challenges. Although beautifully appointed, the main floor layout hindered furniture placement and everyday flow. Furthermore, the provided finishes, including darker flooring, did not align with the client’s preferences.
Unfortunately, it was too late for the developer to offer customization.
Innovative Design Solutions
The Kerr Design Build team, led by senior designer Leo Chester, took on the challenge with creativity and meticulous attention to detail. “The biggest design challenge was the main floor’s flow,” explains Leo. “The original layout offered no practical space for a dining table due to the positioning of the kitchen island.”
His innovative solution was a custom-designed island that embodies modern aesthetics and seamlessly integrates kitchen functionality and dining. The original, standard rectangular island was replaced with an expansive L-shaped island. This unique design includes a cantilevered dining bench, structurally supported by hidden steel brackets, providing an inviting space for gatherings without obstructing flow. A particularly striking feature is the substantial five-foot workstation sink, designed not just for practicality but also as a display and entertaining area, reflecting current trends in high-end kitchen designs.
Enhanced Aesthetics and Functionality
In addition to the island, Kerr Design Build replaced the darker flooring throughout with a lighter wood finish, significantly enhancing the overall brightness and warmth of the space. The walls received elegant oak paneling, creating a modern and continuous aesthetic flow from the kitchen through the living areas. Custom built-in elements further defined the condo’s luxurious yet practical character. These include a sophisticated media unit, a cozy reading nook that doubles as extra storage, and a sleek home office area with integrated shelving.
Second Floor Transformation
On the second floor, Kerr extended their detailed craftsmanship to three bedrooms. The youngest occupant’s room received special attention with comprehensive built-in cabinetry, a custom-designed bed with integrated storage, and a dedicated study area. The master bedroom was elegantly updated with a custom bed framed by an upholstered panel extending from floor to ceiling, incorporating ambient lighting.
Attention to Detail
Careful coordination was essential, especially in matching finishes. Our design team collaborated closely with local artisans, notably commissioning a custom stain to ensure seamless visual integration between different wood elements.
Completed late last year, this renovation overcame initial layout challenges, delivering a residence where sophisticated aesthetics and practical living coexist effortlessly.
Kerr Design Build’s meticulous attention to detail and innovative solutions have delighted the homeowners by providing not only a beautifully redesigned home but also a significantly enhanced living experience.
