The Kerr Memory Box: A Time Capsule for Your Home’s Journey
At Kerr Design Build, we believe a home renovation is more than just a construction project—it’s a profound life transition. That’s why we created the Memory Box: a guided time capsule experience that invites families to pause, reflect, and honour the emotional layers of their home before stepping into its next chapter.
More Than Blueprints and Bricks
Renovations often begin with excitement, but also a sense of letting go. Years of memories are hidden within those walls and hallways: first steps, family dinners, rainy days, celebrations, and quiet moments. The Kerr Memory Box is our way of acknowledging all of it—preserving the past while making room for the future.
A Guided Family Experience
Before demolition begins, we set aside time with each family for a simple but powerful activity. Guided by a member of our team, we walk through three themes:
Honouring the Past – Sharing stories and memories from life in the home as it is now.
Celebrating the Present – Capturing your family’s unique quirks, joys, and milestones.
Dreaming of the Future – Imagining the life you’ll live in the transformed space and recording your wishes for your future selves.
Children are encouraged to draw pictures of their future home. Parents may write letters to their children or each other. Everyone contributes a memento—photos, a marked-up piece of trim, a favourite toy, a note—anything that holds meaning. These go into a beautifully crafted, sealable box, personalized with your family’s name.
What’s in the Box?
Each Memory Box is as unique as the family creating it, but some common inclusions are:
- A family photo and a drawing of the future home
- Letters to future selves
- Handprints or height markings
- Favourite sayings or inside jokes
- A floor plan or photo of the home pre-renovation
- A playlist, USB, or newspaper from today
The box is then sealed and placed appropriately, serving as a time capsule for the future.
Why We Do This
Because homes aren’t just structures. They’re containers of life. And when you look back years from now, we hope you’ll remember not just what changed, but what was cherished.
The Memory Box is a small moment in the renovation journey, but one that many of our clients tell us becomes the most meaningful.
